Check your system for the presence of PCMCIA Card and Socket Services (CSS). If there is no audible "Beep" or "Double beep" tone, when you insert or remove the modem, you may not have CSS installed. In order for your modem to be recognized in the system, CSS drivers must be installed. The CSS drivers are required to configure the system's PCMCIA slot and assign the modem to a Com port. Check with your laptop manufacturer or the system manual on how to install CSS.

The factory default settings will generally work in most situations. If you are using Dial-up-Networking to connect, an initialization string is not needed. However, if your ISP has provided you with special access software that requires entering a string and does not use Dial-up-Networking to connect, then use the string AT&F&C1&D2V1X4.

Before changing the settings of your system and Windows, you should always review the information contained in the Windows manual or Windows "Help" file, or consult with the manufacturer of your system for advice.
Assigning Com Port settings can be performed from the Windows 95/98 "Device Manager". In the Device Manager select (single click) the modem that you wish to re-assign the Com Port setting and click on the "Properties" button. When in the "Modem Properties" dialog box click on the "Resources" tab.
Make note of the current "Basic Configuration", "Input/Output" and "Interrupt Request" settings.
Uncheck "Use Automatic Settings" and select a "Basic Configuration" setting, which does not report a conflict in the "Conflicting Device" list. If none are available consult with the systems manufacturer.

Modems that have the "ISA" designation are designed to be internal to "desktop" or "tower" style PCs. These modems are inserted into the "long" expansion slots of your systems motherboard. These include the "Rapid Transit 56K ISA Modem" and "56K V90 ISA Modem", part numbers: 90056, 90057, 90058.
Modems carrying the "PCI" designation are also internal to "desktop" or "tower" style PCs; however, these are inserted into one of the "shorter" slots on the motherboard. This includes the "56K V90 PCI Modem", part numbers: 90072, 90073, 90074.
The terms "PC Card Modem" and "PCMCIA Modem" generally are used to refer to the same type of modem. Modems carrying this designation have been designed to fit into the "PC" or "PCMCIA" slot of a Laptop computer. Because of their size and appearance, these modems are sometimes called "Credit Card" modems. This includes the "Rapid Transit 56K PC Card Modem", part numbers: ST5614DFNAMSR.

Windows 95/98 will assign the modem to the first available resource settings.
Make sure you have the latest modem updates installed. You can determine what version your modem is using by running the Win 95/98 "Modem Diagnostics" utility. The modem should display "5.xx,1,19" in response to the ATI5 command. If your modem has an earlier version, download and install the latest drivers available on this website. Note: As of 01/27/2000 the latest modem drivers are V.5.66
If you are not using the systems External Serial Com ports. Disabling the External Serial Port in your systems BIOS Setup will free up those resources settings. With the unused External Serial Ports disabled you should be able to reassign the modem to either COM 2 - 4 using the Windows 95/98 "Resource Manager".

No, both Windows 95 and Windows 98 have the necessary set of drivers to install your modem. Simply insert the modem into an available PCMCIA or "PC Card" slot and allow Windows to automatically recognize the modem and install the drivers.

The documentation uses the Com 2 setting as an example only. Windows 95 and 98 will assign the modem to the first available set of system resources. If the resources for Com 2 are already used, Windows may assign the modem to either Com 3 or Com 4.

On the average, the highest speed you can achieve may be 9600bps, although there are claims of reaching 12,000 bps. These have proven to be the exception to the rule, run under strict testing guidelines and conditions which almost never occur in "real world" situations.
Connect speeds over cellular will almost never achieve those of a "Landline" connection. Many factors determine at what speed your modem will connect. These factors may include signal strength, the size of the cell, distance from the repeater, density of cellular traffic, and interference caused by buildings.

From a terminal application, such as "Hyperterminal", available in Windows 95 and Windows 98, type the command AT*AL. Locate your cellular phone in the list of 6 pre-installed cellular phone drivers.
To select a cellular driver from the list as the Default driver, type the command AT*Cn, (n=the number associated with the phone in the list). This will select your phone as the new default setting.

If your phone does not appear on the original list of 6 phones, you may need to update the modem's Flash ROM. You can download and install the Reflash Utility "Modem Visor" from this Website. The file that you will receive is vsr_us_b.exe. The file has been compressed to reduce the time it takes to download files. After downloading, RUN the file vsr_us_b.exe. This will extract and install the Modem Advisor utility to the system. With Modem Advisor installed, you can install or replace cellular drivers on your modem. The Ericsson KH / KF-600 & 700 series phones are relatively new phones. Although new, these models of phones were designed to use existing driver cellular phone drivers. To configure the Apex Data Mobile Plus V.34 to work with the new Ericsson KH / KF 600 & 700 series, select the driver for "Ericsson AH/CT-600, AF-700"

First - Make sure you have configured your modem to the type of phone that you have. From any terminal application, issue the command AT*AL. Locate your cellular phone in the list that comes up and issue the command AT*ACn (n=the number associated with the phone in the list).
Second - If your system is running Windows 95b or Windows 95c, make sure you have the "PC Card Modem" Power Management feature disabled. This can be done by clicking on the "Power" icon in the Win 95 "Control Panel". Click on the "PC Card Modems" tab and remove the check mark in the "Turn off Power to PC Card Modem…" option.
Third - If your system is running under Windows 98. You still have to disable Power Management for PC Card Modems. However, Windows 98 no longer includes access to this feature from the Control Panel. We recommend that you review the Information regarding Power Management and PC Card modems currently available on Microsoft's "Knowledgebase" or consult with the manufacturer of the system.
Finally - If you have just recently installed the modem and you use Dial-up-Networking to access your ISP, make sure that you have updated your connections properties by selecting the Apex Data modem in the "Connect Using" field.
